The Applied Master of Tourism Business Planning (Magister Terapan Perencanaan Pariwisata, abbreviated as Matrappar) of Tourism Department, Politeknik Negeri Bali, is increasingly showing its positive performance in the midst of a constellation of applied masters in tourism which has recently tended to grow like mushrooms in the rainy season.

Established since 2018, Matrappar with the tagline “The School of Managers in Tourism” has proven to be able to fill managerial positions in the tourism industry both in Bali, outside Bali and abroad. Some of them fill important positions, especially in star hotels in major destinations in Indonesia. Several Matrappar masters from the Double-Degree Program with Angers University, France such as Putu Rian Arde Surya and Kezia Jennifer Ratu prefer careers in Paris.

Starting from the first generation (class of 2019), students are recorded as coming from all over the country, from Aceh to Papua. This means that Matrappar ‘sold’ even when it had just opened its class five years ago. Since 2021 (generation 3), always more than 50% of students come from outside Bali. Even in 2022 (generation 4), there are students studying while working in Canada, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Since 2020 (generation 2), several students have graduated from foreign universities (Australia, France, China, Japan, and Taiwan) and this year (2023) there have been two graduates from foreign universities who have applied to become Matrappers (Matrappar students) generation 5.

Masters from generation 1 and 2 who occupy general manager, director, and CEO positions in the tourism industry, such as Purna Wirananta (Taco Casa), Bagus Ngurah Putra (Wyndham Garden Kuta Beach Bali), Eka Pertama (The One Legian), Kertawidyawati (Hatten Wines), Erika Sedana (Moritz Logistics Indonesia), Krishna Arya (Trip.com), and others, are even now ‘industry lecturers’ on campuses, both at bachelor (S-1) and master (S-2) levels.

Apparently the position as the only applied master study program in tourism in Indonesia that has been internationally accredited is a very strong point. IndeedMatrappar is known for maintaining its own brand:

  1. Running high standard quality learning with an applied curriculum based on the international tourism industry,
  2. Having its own professor (not borrowing from other institutions),
  3. Managing the Double-Degree Program since 2020,
  4. Mainstreaming the green tourism paradigm in the tri dharma (three duties) of higher education,
  5. Routinely organizing the annual Green Tourism International Seminar & Entrepreneurship Expo (GTISee), and
  6. Publishing three international journals, namely International Journal of Green Tourism Research and Applications (IJOGTRA); International Journal of Applied Sciences in Tourism and Events (IJASTE); and Journal of Applied Sciences in Travel and Hospitality (JASTH).

As stated by the Head of Tourism Department Politeknik Negeri Bali Prof. Ni Made Ernawati MATM, PhD, with the internationally accredited status, Matrappar is increasingly committed to carrying out its quality orientation, including in terms of selecting prospective new students.

According to Ernawati, it has become part of the Matrappar road map that the quality of collaborative learning is integrated with mutually beneficial cooperation with all tourism industry partners in addition to the internationalization process in its existence as a study program which is internationally accredited by AQAS (Agency for Quality Assurance through Accreditation of Study Programs, Germany).

“Through quality assurance, industrial partnerships, and internationalization, we and all components of Matrappar are always challenged to work hard to get better and more advanced achievements from year to year, including in the process of recruiting prospective new students,” said the professor who graduated from the master program at University of Wolverhampton, England and a doctorate program at Edith Cowan University, Australia.

Regarding the acceptance of these new students, there is still an opportunity for D4/S1 graduates in all fields of study to apply to become Matrappers generation 5 (class of 2023) through this year’s entrance exam. Registration can be done until 11 August 2023 at https://sion.pnb.ac.id.
